Hey all! Some of you know what my build plans for this little z6 are but for those of you who don't here's the deal. I picked up a z6 engine from Ransom a week or so ago with a spun bearing. Plan to completely rebuild with eagle rods and vitara pistons among other misc things. I'm still researching the different types of turbos so that is still up in the air. After the block is built and the turbo is pieced together I will swap it into my EG hatch and HOPEFULLY get 300 whp once it's all said and done.
While all of that is in the works, I'm working on a Si tranny for a A->M conversion in my hatch.
I don't have any pics of the engine but I do have some pics of the car, A->M swap parts, and the tranny teardown.
Here is the specimen for the project:

Back seats I traded to Ransom for the z6...Hope you like them!

Tonight I *tried* to open up the tranny but gave up after I wasn't able to get the 32mm sealing bolt unscrewed...Also found this when I drained the tranny fluid...

I'm going to keep the head stock for now aside from a good cleaning and new valve seals. I'll hit you up though if I change my mind.

Some of that shit looks familiar..lol... That damn tranny!! It drove fine. Crack her open and see whats up, prolly just needs an input shaft bearing.

and new gears....lol
who knows what those chunks are though...hoping to got its something dumb like a bearing but if its gears the thing is just going to the trash..or a hybrid tranny rebuild...who knows

I cant really tell from the pics, but i dought its pieces of gears. More so pieces of the input or main shaft bearings.

That's what I'm thinking too but we'll see.
Worse comes to worse I replace some gears and do a Si/ZC hybrid tranny.
I'm about to take some more pics before work. Check back.

Hell yeah! Sounds like a friends build, hes using Tuner Toys rods and Vitaras. Hes hoping for mid 300s or better... SOHC_Mshue on Honda-Tech if you're ever in the forced induction forum over there.
He'll be using a T04e 57 trim I believe.

H-T people scare me :P
I know the concept behind turbos but I still have A LOT to learn about the different sizes and all of that shit. D-series.org has been pretty helpful...some dude pushing 741 hp i think on a z6
Ventolin

I'm sure hes there, too. When we were both kids I was a dumbass trying to make my hatch clean... meanwhile he spent all his money on turbo parts. Still has the same car and its been through more than a few motors and setups, all SOHC though.
mintygood

Haha true Dseries fan.
I'm just looking forward to taking it to the track and having people ask me to pop the hood only to see a tiny SOHC D series :)

ive been running Tuner Toys rods and Vitaras pistons in my crx for 6 months, so far so good! right now im running just a lil t25
making roughly 200 hp. but im in the middle of piecing together another setup, looking for a 16G hoping for 300 hp
(300 hp + 1900 lb car = weeeee)

anyone have experience with tuner toys rods?

Ready to see this build get rolling, once my Talon's motor is done, I plan on building a z6 for my hatch so I will definitely be looking for perspective on your build.. Let me know if you ever need a second hand or anything, I would love to help.

Pretty much have all of the parts for the engine itself picked out already...Just did some research for Tuner Toy rods and they looked like the better choice. But I will defiantly check it out for some turbo setups....still need to do A LOT of research turbo-wise.
I'll post up a detailed list of the changes and parts I will be installing tomorrow if I remember lol.
Thanks for checking out the thread!

Was too lazy to list all of the parts I'm getting but I did get the fucking head studs to come loose and got the block on the stand.
Surprisingly it had an engine full of oil which is good I suppose....no oil burning FTW (not like it matters since I'm getting new pistons w/ rings but w/e)
Taking the head over to Mitch's house this weekend hopefully so he can remove the valve springs so I can soak it in purple power and get it nice and shiny.
Pics tomorrow maybe! :P

Hey all.
Couldn't find any batteries for my camera so no pics of the engine for now.
I did find some interesting stuff on the intarweb about hybrid trannys.
Since I will have to rebuild my tranny I might as well make it as efficient as possible. My plan so far is to keep the 1st and 2nd si gears, add 3rd and 4th ZC gears, and add the 0.702 5th from the Dx tranny. The reason I chose this setup is because I want short 1-4 for quick acceleration and a long ass 5th so I can cruise at a low RPM (fuck gas prices).
I still have a lot of research to do tranny wise. I want to make sure that a shift at 7,200 RPM from 4th will still keep me at full spool for when I go into 5th....hope that made sense.
Critique is always welcome. Thanks for looking!

wouldn't it be cheaper & easyer to just buy a dx tranny.
with being turbo'ed u would just blow threw the si gears way to fast .
thats one of the problems im having, & it's alot harder on the clutch.

Hmmm never really thought of it like that....wouldn't i get full spool faster with the Si tranny though?

yea for 1 sec & then u would have to shift gears.
& u will spin threw most of it lol
mintygood
06-26-2008, 01:04 PM
yeah but when i shift i will not lose as much spool as i would if i shifted with a dx....
si leaves you at a higher rpm after you shift.
idk, I've done a lot of research on this on D-series.org and almost all of them say that the dx is full of fail.

do it properly - run the calculations - graph torque vs. mph through all gears (overlay) ... find intersections for shift points ... then voila!
here's an example:
http://img503.imageshack.us/img503/4766/gearingdataif2.png
http://img383.imageshack.us/img383/2665/torquecurvesri0.png
if that doesnt make sense - ill try to explain it better - but im sure its described in detail on the intarwebz somewhere ...
the only issue we ran into when i did those initial calculations was - could the suspension/tires handle putting all the torque to the ground? if they cant, then youre not gonna get optimum anything ... but you know how to deal with that :D
mintygood
06-26-2008, 05:33 PM
Awesome, Venom.
Extremely detailed....did all of that just get spit out after some dyno pulls???
I just don't want to keep on buying trannys only to find that one of them "feels" less than optimal.
The car will not be sitting on stock suspension and tires for long!!
:)
On a side note, I'm currently in chatt right now at my college orientation so no pic updates for a while (sorry!)
Hopefully I will take some tomorrow?
thanks for everyone's input

actually - yes, more or less...
i was given 2007 dyno data (and we assumed that our 2008 build would not be a significant change, which was more or less true) - the data was simply Horsepower Curves, Torque Curves, and MPH ... same you get from any other dyno
since we were using a Honda CBR600 engine, i did that garbage with the countershaft & drive sprocket up top ... and the primary reduction ... and with all that, i can make that first graph:
A table for each gear, showing the MPH Value - RPM Value - HP Value and TQ Value .... the MPH Value is the only thing changing, which is a function of the gear youre in, the other 3 values are copy/paste as you see ...
Then i was able to graph Torque for each gear on the same graph (solid colored lines - they are the same for every gear, obviously ... just translated right accordingly) .... and then graphed the lines representing RPM vs MPH for each gear (dotted lines)
once youve done this, you find the intersection between the 1st and 2nd Torque curves ... make a point ... go directly down from that point until you hit the straight (dotted) line representing 1st gear, and make another point ... go directly left from that point and read off the correct RPM value that is your "optimum" shift point .... these points should be the same for almost every gear - and if that value does not work with your setup (if the turbo isnt gonna be spooled, or whatever) then you need to adjust your setup
the same can be done for HP instead of Torque, but since its generally agreed that TQ is what gets you going where you need to be, thats what we go by @ VU Motorsports!
sorry for the lengthy posts, but i hope this helps with build selection

Just sold my iPod for $250 (woot).
Also took off the oil pan. Gave it a good cleaning and only found some metal shavings...no big chunks. Wasn't able to go any further than that today because I wasn't able to get some bolts un done....I need a bigger breaker bar....20" isn't cutting it.

I think I'm going to suck it up and spend 100 extra bucks on the fjt custom length I-beam rods. When using TT, Eagle or any other standard length rod with vitaras they sit 2mm below deck which makes the turbo do more work to get the same hp and causes more stress on the cylinder walls...input?

Damage so far:
2-3 bad bearings
destroyed shift fork
Currently waiting a few because the hex bolt in the clutch housing is siezed up so I sprayed some WD40 on it and tapped it with a hammer. Going to wait about 10 mins and see if it will come off this time.
Pics of the havoc later!
PS...thinking about going NA so I can have some money left over for college.....$0.02?

yeah that's what i was thinking....could use p29 pistons with stock rods and after college I could just buy tunertoy rods and vitaras and have a turbo block
Also, just finished up dissassembling the tranny. The damage isn't too bad...just have to replace shift forks and input shaft bearing....everything else looks good. Also currently considering buying a ZC tranny for 250 so I could add the 3rd and 4th gears from that to my Si tranny.

whats the molecular structure of water? h2o right? 1 hydrogen atom and 2 oxygen atoms
therefore water contains oxygen so its possible that rust can form underwater.... dunno how the Purple Power would affect it though

Going to use the ACL bearings for all standard needs...if there are any other sizes that the block calls for then I'll just buy the oems.
All in all everything looks good...All I need to do to get started is borrow Mitch's tool to get the crank pully off and then I can ship the block to the machine shop.
NOOB QUESTION: How do I remove the stock pistons from the rods? Is heating the rod with a propane torch the correct procedure?? *note: using the stock rods with the pistons since I am going NA until I get some money after college*
Thanks guys! pics later, yo!

to get the pistons off the rod, im pretty positive you have to have them pressed out because oem wrist pins are pressed. and i would honestly think you'll be happier if you spent a little extra on rods, rods arent something to really skimp on especially on d-series rods. but if you have your mind set on using stock rods..look into upgrading to arp rod bolts at the least.
and a reminder if you didnt know already, when you do your bore and hone, make sure you give them the pistons and rings also so they can properly hone and assign the pistons to the right cylinder.
follow the rule of thumb..do it right the first time so you dont have to do it a 2nd time, or do it right the first time or dont do it at all.or spend your money once instead of wasting it a 2nd time....i could go on and on.lol hope that helps

Thanks for the input but I've done a lot of research parts wise so I'm pretty sure that I'm set. The z6 rods are good to about 210-220 Hp and to be honest I would be happy if I got 140
I would buy some TT rods or something like that but I'm not going to touch nitrous and I should be only running 11.5:1-12:1 on 93 so I should be good.
Also looking for a reputable machine shop. Anyone have any good experiences with any within 30 mins of Nashville?

yeah I accidentally said boost instead of nitrous in my last post but the plan is to build a reliable NA motor while I'm in college and once I get out I will replace the pistons and rods and piece together a turbo kit if finances allow

Didn't ready much after the first post. Those pieces are from a shifter fork which you'll have to replace. When gear teeth break off, they stick to the magnet.

Bit of an update...Just installed exhaust valves with the new seals
BTW I can't remember which springs are which for the D-series.......
There are springs that when you look at them from the side the ends of the springs end at the same spot and there are springs where, if looking from the same angle, start and end at different places....
If I remember correctly the springs that start and end at different spots are exhaust....correct me if I'm wrong? NOT IN HELMS yo

only spent 400 so far. Also got tuner toys to take the rods back without the 20% restocking fee so no harm done there.
Block, crank, pistons, and rods are at Mark at napa and he is working on them.
Block:
Bore
Hone
Resurfacing the deck
Crank:
Just cleaning it now to see if it is any good
Pistons:
Attaching to rods
Rods:
Getting them cleaned up and conditioned as well as getting the big ends to uniform sizes.

AH!
Just drove down to chatt and moved into my dorm. I've been so busy so I have neglected this thread...but I'm bringing it back from the dead!
I got the block back from Mark at napa. Looks great...nice and clean with a 0.020 bore.
Also put some HX wheels that I bought from sil84 on my hatch. They are stripped right now and have some curb rash so they look a little rough but I'm going to repair the curb rash and paint them gun metal.
What color should I paint my block....I was thinking either a flat clean black or an obnoxious gold with gold sparkles lol.
$0.02?

Alright well I have a question about my car and I guess I'll ask it here since there is no general.
For a while when I would drive around 75-85 for a sustained time I would get a scratching/squeaking sound that sounded similar if you rubbed a quarter on a pane of glass. This sound would go away when I lightly put on the brakes. Now the sound is much worse and pushing the brakes does not make it go away.
Have done zero brake work since I got the car 3 years ago (when I was 15 my dad said the brakes looked fine and I never bothered to even give a shit lol)
Thanks!

i would rub my finger down one of the rotors and fell for deep lines in it if you fell very deep lines worn in i would go ahead and get some new rotor also they are only about 30 each at auto zone/advance or where ever.

nope they are just stock rods and I didn't shot peen them. This will be an NA setup so I will be surprised if I get 140 out of it....when I have some more money I'm going to rebuild again with vitaras and tuner toy rods. Stock should be good for NA :)

well thats probably because y8s have naturally higher comp because of a smaller combustion chamber. I just chose to build the D because I was tired of looking for a fucking b18. Plus D series stuff is cheap :)
After tune I was toying around with the idea of slapping a 50 shot of nitrous on it...not sure yet...have to finish building the engine first lol

Hey dude, I like where you're going with the build. Heres my input:
- Satin Black looks good alot of the time, but some days, especially bright days, you're going to think you yourself, "Damn that looks like shit". Alot of those cars look great because they have soft lighting. Its just the nature of a flat paint.
- N/A is ok, but don't have high expectations. When I lived in VA, I had a friend with a y8, full bolt ons, ZC pistons, Crower Stage 2 cams and valvetrain, and tuned on Hondata. I don't remember how much he put down, but bolt on B-series walked him in similarly weighted cars. He spent a good bit on that motor, too.
- Love the muffler you're going with. Clean.
- Keep up the good work!

yeah I was going to do something clean like satin black but since the engine bay (and the car eventually) will be flat or satin black, I wanted something more noticeable for the block color. I was thinking about something obnoxious and ridiculous like gold with sparkles or something along those lines.
Not really looking for big numbers. My main goal is to get this car looking clean, running great, and extremely reliable. I just want an engine with a little more pickup and "0" miles.
thanks for the input!

-Build floor for rear interior and carpet
-Fix front bumper mounting hardware
-Clean up interior wiring
-New wiper blades
-Repaint sideskirts
-Pull misc dents
-Vanity plate...throwing some ideas around for what it should say.
Long term:
-Pull the b7
-Pressure wash engine bay
-Wire tuck
-Paint engine bay
-New engine in
-Dtak to 14k rpms as much as possible
-Prep and paint car (milano red or flat black...haven't decided)
-Tint windows
-Some kind of front lip...haven't decided yet
Optional shit that I want to do at some time...:
-s2k seats
-s2k cluster swap
-One of those fancy honda 3 spoke(?) steering wheels
-Better speakers...maybe...probably not.

yeah. not sure if you've seen the back of a hatch with no interior but the spot where the spare is and the spot where the seats go are of 2 diff heights and he didn't level it out. I would build something to make it just a flat surface.
Also going to dyna mat the rear before I build it and stuff some cheap pillows under the floor. Hopefully I can greatly reduce road noise by doing that.

assembly should begin tomorrow if everything goes to plan. The only thing I'm slightly worried about is the rod bolts. When mark at napa did all of the machine work on the pistons/rods, he mentioned that he pre-stretched the rod bolts (arp) so I only need to tighten them 1/3 of the recommended torque value. Not too confident in this advice.
venom_5
05-14-2009, 12:07 AM
when you hit vtec and wind it out to 10k rpms ... if your rods dont fly out of the block, then you will know that he was right ... no big deal, really

lol thanks. Didn't mean to nit-pick. I don't really plan to rag this engine out... Just want it to be reliable. I'm probably just going to ignore what he said and torque them to spec.... Someone stop me if I'm doing something terrible.
Jankenshank
05-14-2009, 12:40 AM
head will go first at 10k rpm,
but also the advice mark gave you, it sounds sound.....
from what i gather,
by pre-stretching the bolt its already been torqued to spec so the required torque applied on teh torque wrench (since the torque wrench is measuring the friction of the bolt and nut) is less, torquing to spec on a pre-stretched bolt is applying more that spec torque, in turn over yielding the bolt..
If the bolt is not properly preloaded (understretched) then the high-rpm tension is enough to stretch the rod bolts a very tiny amount with each revolution. This high-speed cycling of the bolt is similar to bending a paper clip back and forth until it breaks. That's obviously something you want to avoid.
but you have to either go by torque or stretch,
Torque vs. Stretch
The torque spec applied to any particular fastener is merely an estimate of the twisting force required to achieve the correct amount of preload or clamp load. Many times this is the only way to apply fastener load because the bolt threads into a blind hole like in the cylinder block. One advantage to the rod bolt is that both ends of the bolt can be accessed. This allows you to use a rod bolt stretch gauge. This is a specialty tool sold through companies like ARP that will accurately measure the amount of bolt stretch.
The procedure is actually quite simple. Once the connecting rod and cap are installed on the crank, start a nut on the rod bolt, slip on the appropriate-size box-end wrench, and then install the stretch gauge. All ARP connecting rod bolts have a small dimple placed on both ends of the bolt that accurately position the rod bolt gauge pins on the bolt. Next, zero the gauge on the relaxed bolt. Then you carefully tighten the rod bolt until the gauge reads the appropriate stretch amount.

yep he had to torque to spec to make all of the rod journals uniform. I'll probably give him a call tomorrow and see what he says although I doubt he remembers me..... He better though considering he did like 300 bucks worth of work on my engine components

i forgot to say this earlier ... why not get ahold of another rod bolt, and compare it to yours, should be easy to tell if yours are in fact stretched, and by how much

Hope you have a cam to throw in there with the P29s... I wouldn't even start that engine up on the stock ECU.
Stock timing on a stock cam with that high of compression will get those ringlands cracking in a hurry. Starting it up with the dizzy retarded all the way might be a good enough bandaid to limp it to a tuner... but do not drive it untuned, or you'll be doing this again.
FYI, even though P29s are cheap and readily available... the D series community has just about abandoned them. The piston shape is terrible for flame propagation.
