I hear these way to often:

Sigmund: “Man we got the new Cobras can’t wait to get it on the track”
Ed: “There’s an event in September”.
Sigmund: “Can’t make that one, I want the new Steeda G++ Track suspension before I take it out.”

Six months later.
Ed: “Got a track event next month you gonna come”
Sigmund: “Naw can’t make it, I want the new Godzilla vs. King Kong Supersupercharger, I will need that extra HP on the track.”

Six months later
Ed: “Got a track event next month you gonna come”
Sigmund: “Naw, can’t make it , I am gonna send the car to Kangaroo Racing down in Australia to see if they can fix the tune after I installed the GKK Supersupercharger.”

Six months later
Ed: “Got a track event next month you gonna come”
Sigmund: “Man I would love to but with 650 HP I want to get the new Stoptech Larger than Big, Kryptonite 12 piston brakes, with the diamond encrusted pads, the spent uranium rotors with the Freon direct assisted cooling kit. Before I hit the track”

Six months later
Ed: “Got a track event next month you gonna come”
Sigmund: “I am having some problems with the stock motor, probably need a rebuild after running 25lbs of boost for too long. Gonna probably send it to Fruits and Nuts Racing out in California for their super 900 HP build and Kangaroo Racings new tune with the GKK Supersupercharger.”

Six months later
Ed: “Got a track event next month you gonna come”
Sigmund: “Man I would love to , but I need some new rubber, but am going to wait until Ford Racing starts supplying the new 18’ Bling Blings, and UPR is going to install the full Billet Shiny Kit.”

Six months later
Ed: “Got a track event next month you gonna come”
Sigmund: “I think that I am ready, I am wondering what class I should register for? You know I got the Steeda G+++, the GKK Supersupercharger, the Stoptech Larger than Big Kit, the Kangaroo Racing tune, with the Fruits and Nuts 900 HP rebuild, not to mention the 18 Bling Blings and the new Nitto IIR’s…”
Ed: “Don’t forget the UPR Billet Shiny Kit.”
Sigmund: “yea that too, so what do you think?”
Ed: “Novice??”

Work. We need more week day track/auto-x events to accomidate ME. It sucks durring the season to be driving past autoxers going the opposite direction, knowing that they will be huffing gas and tire fumes (without the bad side affects). While I am on my way to bed just to go back to work way before the autox day is done
Self loathing has past now, I do only work six days a month, just on the two days I wish I didn't. :)

They need one of these for this type of thing:

Racing Excuse Generator (http://turnzero.com/technical_resources.php?resource=racing_excuse_gen erator)

Seriously:
-I can understand not tracking/auto-x ing your DD that is on its last leg and that you can't afford to fix/replace.
-I can understand if you just like fabricating and have built an all-show-no-go car to polish and win ribbons with.

However:
-If you've put money into all type of performance/go-faster parts
-If you are constantly asking questions about which this or that is better or how to set crap up to take that one exit ramp on the way home a little faster....

Don't you think it'd be nice to actually USE what you've built and not have to worry about getting your license yanked?

I've seen sooo many Civics/Integras/etc. that would probably be really fun autocross cars with the coilovers, ITBs, etc, but are just driven around like some type of JV status symbol.

I once complimented a fellow on a pretty extensively fiddled Civic hatch (I mean gutted, chassis braces, roll hoop, harnesses, NA engine work). I asked if he tracked or autocrossed ever, and he looked at me with a straight face and said, "nah, it's just a hard-parker".

To each their own and all that, but I give more benefit of the doubt to someone who comes to an event and starts the learning process than someone who never comes out. No one is going to tell you that you suck after your first event (unless, of course, you were talking trash first :)).

I understand why some people do not run track day events but there is no excuse for not auto-x'ing if you drive you street car in any many other than how a 80 year old lady would.

To add some local flavor here: If you have taken your car up the Dragon or Skyway, you have absolutely NO excuse not to come to at least an autocross if not a track day. Either type of event has less statistical risk to you and your vehicle.

You are right...Track days just costs alot more so affordability becomes an issue whereas auto-x is pretty cheap.

Tenn. Region SCCA event and the Tri-Lakes Sports Car club events in Tullahoma are the two local events. Tri-Lakes is cheaper but a farther drive and not SCCA sanctioned. In any event an auto-x is usually gonna run 20-40 dollars.

I categorize drifting with other judged "sports" such as figure skating, ballroom dancing, gymnastics, etc. The judge in any true motorsport is the clock.

Don't get me wrong, I like to drift for fun. Hell I was out with you guys messing around in the snow, and I'll go watch some drift events. I just have no interest in doing it "competitively."

my favorite excuse- "i need more practice"

i get this all the time and im like WTF? where you gonna practice at?? cause thats what track days are for is for practice!! competitions are still for practice. after practice days and you feel comfortable to compete. you'll realize you learn a lot more at competitions. being pushed by better drivers is what makes you better.

Hit the track, dont be a vag.

I'm gonna have to come out to the track this year. This thread has convinced me to not be a vag. The only thing that has "scared" me about it is my small oil leak. When it says no "excessive" leaks, what are we talking about here? I have some oil leaks but they aren't bad in my opinion. I probably loose right at a quart every 5,000. Is that going to prevent me from passing tech?

If you park your car in a clean spot for an hour, will there be oil on the ground when you leave?

I don't think so but I'll found out tomorrow at work for sure. When i get there in the morning, I'll put a piece of cardboard under my car and check it an hour later. I really don't think there will be, but if there is I would say it's probably the size of a quarter at the most. Damn Honda's and their oil leaks.

Wheelman13
02-26-2010, 06:10 PM
My MR2 used to leave about a quarter-sized spot after an hour (until I sorted that business). It never failed tech.

The main thing you should ask is, "is this leak indicative of something that could lead to a more substantial payload of oil being deposited on the track at an inopportune moment?".

i.e. if your oil pan seeps a little when it's parked, or you have a crusty dizzy o-ring, it's probably no biggie. If your rear main seal is leaking or you have some really questionable hoses...maybe it's not the best idea to put them under much more stress.

DAtIntegra35
02-26-2010, 06:16 PM
Oil pan is new. O ring in the distributor does leak but I can fix that easily. At one time I was told the rear main seal leaks, but I need to have that verified because at that time there was oil everywhere due to the leaky oil pan and busted axles so it was hard to see what was what. Ill get it up on the lift at work tomorrow with one of the techs and see if we can pin point the main leak and if it is "hazardous" to autox with.

Auto-x is less stringent tech than anything on a road course. You're never going 100mph towards a wall at any point in an auto-x, so you'd probably be fine. You'd hate to get out there and pop a seal though.

DAtIntegra35
02-27-2010, 12:10 AM
Yeah I know what you mean. I def won't make it out to the march 7 but after that I plan to do a couple as long as the schedule allows. I'll make sure I got the tegs motor right before anything. Last thing I need is to pop a seal. I'm really excited about this though. The line that put me over the edge to get me thinking about it was the one about the tail of the dragon. Haha

Of course Auto X is going to be cheaper than a road course. One is in a parking lot and the other a track. You only get approximately 6-7 minutes of seat time at an Auto-X. Track days usually gets you around 2hrs. of seat time. I'm not a big fan of Auto-X, but I do like the competition. I'll probably be doing more of them this year since my car will be a good candidate for the new STR class.
