Ammonia + black plastic bag + sunlight.
Kills the glue, you can peel it right off.

the tint is very old and brittle the car originally came from AZ... so its dry and brittle with a bunch of bubbles...

Never heard that one before, and I work at a tint shop until the AF takes my butt in April. Taking backs off is a PITA.
A steamer does work pretty well, but probably not for brittle, purple stuff.

I second this. I heard alot of good reviews about this method just no experience with it. Might be easier just to take it to a tint shop if they don't charge to much and have them remove it. I was charged $30 but they reinstalled new tint so they might have cut the price some.

you should be able to use the trash bag method man, ammonia will seep under the tint and loosen it up. ;)

Went into the shop today to discuss this black bag method with ammonia. They've actually done it before, but the kicker is that you don't even have to use ammonia.
Just straight water will make the tint weep itself off, but you'll need a few hours in the sun to really get it off, and then there's no guarantee that the glue will come off with it. It's alot like using a steamer, and even with that there's no chance the glue will come right off ( trust me, I know ).

black trash bag, soap & water, and the HOT SUN!...
spray the tint with soap and water, put the trash bag on there... it has to be a thin black trash bag, then put it in the sun.. wait 5 mins.. come back and peel it off.. NO GLUE.
TRUST ME- i used to work at xtreme window tint..

NO RAZOR BLADES ... if you have defrost lines.. you will tear up your rear defroster if you use a razor blade on it.. it wont work anymore..
if you dont have a defroster lines, then its okay to use razorblade..
But, with the trash bag solution i said ABOVE ^^^^ it should leave no glue on the glass if your careful peeling it slow..
