View Full Version : G35 coupe wheels on IS300? (Photoshop Picture Inside)

Tossing around ideas of ditching the ugly factory wheels but it's a major pain trying to find something that doesn't look too sporty or too luxurious for the IS300 as it kind of walks that line, and doing it all on a budget (like an OEM-ish look). The idea here is to put in no more than $400 on a set of wheels, grab some tires for them, then sell the wheels and tires I have now to recoup the tire costs and only be out of pocket the cost of the wheels.
http://xs.to/image-B46A_4BA44804.jpg
That's a photoshop of lowered but not slammed on 18x8 +30 stock G35 coupe wheels, which can be had used for at or under $400. I'm REALLY liking how this is looking, like the perfect combination of sporty luxury. I'd run no center caps unless the Lexus ones will fit. The offset is fairly aggressive for an IS300 and the wheels are slightly concave, but the styling is classy. Just looks like it "fits" without being too simply or overly complicated to me. I think it would be a really nice daily driver set of wheels. I'd run a 215/40/18 all around, which would be a slight stretch on the 8" wheel, and I'd probably need every little bit of help I could get with fender clearance anyway (already going to have to roll and maybe pull a little to fit).
I'd also be open to considerations of a color change on the wheels (such as a matte bronze, mag blue, or possibly charcoal, but really lean towards keeping them silver to keep them classy).
Thoughts?

One more of a side angle just for kicks and to see how the concave face looks. Obviously couldn't get offset right, they'd sit much more flush and look that much better than the photoshop shows.

tC rims = fail. Non-dimensional RPF1-wannabe-looking garbage. :p
Seriously though I'd rather just get RPF1s if I was going that route. That's more sporty than I'm going for though. I want a bit more of a touch of class in there too.

Eh, they're okay. I really want something a little concave and OEM-ish looking. That looks too aftermarket for what I'm wanting to do with the car (drop it a little but not a lot, OEM-ish wheels, subtle front lip and call it a day).

I could, easily, since I won't have the logo in the middle anyway. :) Love the style, but can't rightfully rock an Infiniti centercap on a Lexus. I'll either work out a way to get a Lexus cap on or run with no centercaps.

If you can that would be awesome. I'm curious about the G35 coupe wheels I photoshopped or even the 17" sedan wheels that are the 7 spokes as well.

Let me know if you want to get rid of your ASAs and go back to stock wheels and tires. I'd be glad to make a trade + cash.

centercaps shouldnt be a problem when the time comes. many companies make them in different sizes for aftermarket wheels. any other wheels you have considered?

Yes actually...
http://xs.to/image-9B98_4BA6A93F.jpg
Final three choices that I'm narrowed down to. Top ones are hypersilver 18s, bottom two are both 17s one being silver with a polished lip (non-staggered) and one being bronze (all offsets in the 30-35 range). I lean towards 17s. Photoshop shows the car lowered, and I'll also be adding a subtle lip to the front, but no other exterior mods are planned. Keeping it simple and subtle. Thoughts?

17s look small. 2nd wheel in 18 would be pimp.

03-21-2010, 08:31 PM
^ i agree, although staggered would give it a much better stance. either way i like the second ones on your car. a lip will set it all off nicely as well
josh99ta
03-21-2010, 08:53 PM
Don't make those in 17s, but they're my front-runners too. I'll use spacers for a staggered fitment, but the lips will be the same all around. I want to be able to rotate them. Function > form for this car.

Honestly, it'd look better on stock wheels. Maybe the first set.... I mean, if you're just going to go mild and aren't going to lower the car much I'd stick with an OEM style wheel (or something that looks it)
josh99ta
03-22-2010, 06:45 AM
That's why I lean towards the first ones, as they are OEM wheels (although just not Toyota OEM). I like the other two also as they're close to OEM wheels that you seen on other cars. The third set is actually a m4d t!ghT JDM set y0! LOL The second set isn't anything special, but reminds me of the E36/E39 BMW sedans and wagons that had the smaller factory mesh wheels. I love those cars, and with the #2 wheels it's kind of my inspiration for that look and why I lean more towards that look than the others. After #2 the first ones are my next choice, and I threw the third ones in as they're "legit" wheels and wanted to see if anyone actually picked them over either of the other two sets.

The G wheels are nice... but the "Legit" wheels are a no-no. Despite them not being knockoff bullshit wheels, they're still not appropriate for the car - too "boy racer" "street tuner" etc. Honestly, G35 (if you really want them) wheels look nice. If you wanted to look at some other brands, there is the MB brand, from Discount Tire. I'd support them, because they are directly marketed by a company that provides great service and customer care. Good luck - I look forward to seeing the results of your choice.

Actually Chris, the second wheels, the mesh ones, are MB wheels. MB Mesh X to be exact. I don't care too much for the "legit" wheels either but wanted to include them just to see if someone picked them over the other two choices, which I feel are much more "theme appropriate" for the car. I'm actually leaning towards them more than the others the more I think about it mainly because A) I love mesh wheels and B) with spacers and a good fit they'd look great. Those E3x BMWs with the factory mesh wheels look so good. As the IS300 was direct competition for the 3-series I kind of like the idea of rolling with a wheel that's similar too but more fitting to the IS. I really like the fact that they're split 9-spokes, something you don't see very often (usually 8 or 10). I'm actually pretty set on them I believe. Hopefully put in my order in another week or two. Was going to use that money for another gun (shotgun), but I've got the Ruger and want wheels more than I want another gun right now. :) I'll do a mild drop for now if Milon and I can work something out on his Pro Kit, then down the road I'll get coilovers, add spacers, and really get a more low, more flush, more purposeful looking setup.
MB Mesh X (17x7 +45, would use 10mm spacers in front and 15mm rear spacers for best fitment)

IMHO, the more aggressive style of wheel, the more aggressive stance you'll need to pull it off. Mesh wheels are like that - if you rock them and don't have a good stance it just looks like a halfway done setup.
In the spirit of a clean, comfortable ride that looks good and has only a mild drop... I'd go with the first set.
If I had an IS300 I'd buy a set of Leon Hardiritts Klosters - a five spoke, sporty yet classy design... fits well with the spirit of the IS300.

Doesn't matter that much, as far as swapping manufacturer's wheels. I've run GT500 Mustang wheels on my Supra, as well as have fitted (not driven) 03 Terminator wheels on it. Looked... a little weird, but whatever.

I like FR500s on the IS, look great, but offsets are extremely aggressive, more so than I'm ready to fit.
Love those wheels James. I've got a sneaking suspicious they're $$$ though. I'd love to have a wheel like that though.

I love that. Not head-turning, but sure looks great for stock. That's sort of the look I'd like for the IS.

Details? They do look pretty good. Looks like you chopped the car lower and those are scaled to an 18" size.
The more I see thick 5 spokes with a little lip the more I like them (for these cars). I just hate the weak, thin factory 5 spokes. Any suggestions on affordable thick 5 spokes, preferably concave or with a little bit of a lip?

pm linelocksrus(josh) and ask him what they are. I chopped those on his cobra but he didnt say the name. also the car is not lowered any, and that should be an 18. all I had was the wheel so I had to use the tire that u had had on there

I noticed that you had (of thse 3 pics you posted) the top one had the taillights "de-riced" as the Evo owners call it. I mean they were not chrome but red. I think that has an affect on the look of the wheels IMO...
I was just not sure if anyone caught that...

Agreed. I wouldn't mind going pretty low, but slammed is out of the question. I'm never going to get into hella flush/poke area, but wouldn't mind getting flush/flush-ish with just some minor wheelwell gap (kind of like how my Camaro was).
Suggestions on other OEM/OEM style wheels that would work?
If I had an IS300 I'd buy a set of ... five spoke, sporty yet classy design... fits well with the spirit of the IS300.
The more I look at different wheels the more I agree. I think I don't like the stock wheels because they're thin, and while the IS is a smaller car it's kind of chunky. A chunky 5 spoke looks really good. Any suggestions on aftermarket options that would fit that criteria and not break the bank?

Yeah, didn't bother doing that with all the 'chops. They'll be "de-riced" permanently though. I have vinyl on them now and will be painting them soon.

I do like those, just don't dig the plain jane finish. Have you seen the 2009 ISx50 wheels though? I'm REALLY digging those. More aggressive looking than the previous ISx50 wheels and a really nice hyperdark-style finish. BRB...photoshopping...

If I decide to go this route I'll get some 15mm F/20mm R spacers for my factory wheels now and then keep my eyes peeled for deals on a set of new ISx wheels. I definitely like this look a lot. I really may end up going this direction. Just let me know on those springs and also if you want to work out that deal with a photoshoot.

Yeah, too big for me. The biggest I'll ever go is 18" and even most 18s look too big on the IS IMO unless it has a lot of aero work to set it off.
......
???
Love your bronze Emotions. Wish I could afford some and wish they made them in a polished/SBC finish, but I've never seen any. Aggressive offsets with concave rear SBC 18" Emotions on my car slammed would be exactly what I'd go with if money were no object.

Only have a 0.75" lip though, which is basically non-existant lip IMO. It would be like an Integra on the factory mesh wheels or BMWs on their factory mesh wheels. Not that that's a bad thing, I like the way all of those look, they just wouldn't be very aftermarket looking, which isn't a bad thing for the overall look I'm going for, I just wonder if the lip will be too small though.

I'm married now and have other priorities, don't have thousands of dollars to drop on this sort of stuff nor do I care to. By the time I did tires and everything I'd be well over $2k for that setup, and I know that $1300 is finding a deal. $2k is a lot of money. $1,300 is a lot of money when I could put it towards debt/the house/retirement/etc.
