I can basically classify mine as a hobby b/c it is how I relax after a week at work. The competitive nature of auto-x and other events just comes from that natural tendency to want to compete and do better. That is why when people pull up next to me on the street, I am able to just let them go without even a first thought of wanting to race. I'll admit, it does give you a huge rush to win when you've spent a lot of hard earned money and time setting up a car.
I bought the Miata to be competitive in a class w/ the SCCA. I bought the MR2 b/c its a car I've always wanted and they are one of the most attractive cars ever built in my opinion

haha. My friend Jessica was the one who flashed you while working the course one day. She kept flashing me while driving too. My thought process was "left, right, slalom, brake, boob.........wait, boob isn't part of the course.....oh well go with it"

I don't buy cars to race. I buy cars to be part of a car scene so I can make cool automotive forums and ban n00bs like Top Gunn.

pretty much i just love being around cars of all kinds when i was little i used to help my dad work on his jeeps and then go 4wheeling.. and now that i drive.. theres no way i can afford to pay to build a jeep and 4wheel so i went to the next thing which was imports and have been stuck on them ever since. i guess i could call it a hobby but its more of a passion its what i love doing and i learn new stuff everyday.

I love driving. Any form, back roads, auto-x, track days, drifting. I love the mechanics behind everything from the motor to the suspension.

I dont buy cars just to race with them. I'd only compete with myself. People that have been really fast wont ever race on the street or ask to drag anyone else. Got into car's cause i enjoy hangin around other car people with similiar intrests. As far as being a automotive enthusiast, a car i daily drive and one i fix up an put money in are 2 diffrent things to me. To be a auto enthusiast is not to just work on your own car but to help others out also.

I'm another one thats just been around them my entire life, going up around my uncles who drag raced and did circle track and all the others who just built and restored muscle cars and hotrods. just always been one of those things that brightened my eyes up and intrigued me alot so when i was old enough to get into it for myself i did. it calms me down and helps me relax and forget all the drama and bullshit that goes on in regular day life. so yeah, i guess thats why, call it what you want a hobby, passion or sickness... its not something ill ever be able to stop, lol

I like the smell of gasoline and oil and working on engines, so for me it is a hobby that started in high school and became a way of life in that I work on all my vehicles. If it isn't under warranty I fix it whether the engine, rearend trans, etc fail, I repair it all or take it out and have it rebuilt if I don't have the tools.
I work on and operate eight 134,000 HP gas turbine generators, so I guess I am an HP junkie too.

I enjoy working/repairing/fixing up my cars because they represent, each, a work of art that is, in every sense of the word, personable. Each of my cars has an attitude (problem), and each have their quirks, and each responds differently to the way that I drive them. If I were to drive my Cutlass 442 the way that I drove my Supra, there would be big problems. If I were to do the same to the Supra, and drive it in a fashion representative of the Cutlass, it would have fits.
The Supra is brutal, yet refined, and you have to be nice to it because it'll give back what you put in. It's definitely a female with an attitude problem who wears way too much makeup and expects the world, but when she's happy, it's the best.
The Cutlass is that slut-waitress that's worked at the diner way into her 30's, and will fuck any guy (or girl) in the bathroom without a rubber. Able to be driven hard, never complains, beat the shit out of it, and leave it... always starts, and always lets you know that you can do better.
My truck is old reliable - always runs, always starts, pulls 20,000lbs and doesn't complain, never a problem, never an issue... boring.
My Lexus is a piece in many ways, but it's like that dumpy, homely, next-door girl that you can throw wheels on (or makeup), and take her to the mall and all of a sudden you have every guy wanting to fuck her. Same thing for this car - it's older, has high mileage, but I love it, and it's reliable and has little quirks that differentiate it.
I'd have to say, that's why I work on cars - they all tell stories, all of them.
To answer the question in entirety - I actively HPDE and race the Supra, the Cutlass is a total garagequeen that doesn't get driven much, and I prefer it that way. It's pride in ownership, and the ability to go out for a drive, for 2 hours, alone, and feel good about what you're doing - no friends, no GF, nothing to talk about, nothing to worry about. Some of the best times that I have are alone, with one of my cars. It's a form of purity that is unnerving, yet calming at the same time.

i'd venture to guess that there's a few ladies hangin around with panties around the ankles by what you've bought/sold lately
to answer your questions- 'sweet mouth' haha
why cars?-i was born into it- mom was vw/chevy dealership parts dept manager growing up- now owns & runs a nice repair/used car dealership. my first job was at the honda dealership next door- got to drive the very first g1 acura integra to the big chicago auto show in dec/86-when the honda dealer added acuras- and i've been hooked on 'em (both honda and acura) since.
do you race? no, i'll revv @ anyone though  -the ole man is an x-pro motocrosser and pro circut harescramble champion- and retired honda mc mechanic. ~ i've raced harescrambles-never won  but now just f'n off in the home woods course and in the desert out west for fun-
love the dragstrip, don't compete-
keep our dd's real nice - never rollin dirty.
this lifestyle actually pays for itself... if you're not afraid to work!
that's the what why when and how- WHAT ABOUT YOU TOP GUNN? what makes your clock tick?
