Just wondering - I got into a little phase where I build up a competition level system and competed in some IASCA competitions.
I miss my last and best system I built in my cavalier and even placed in a few competitions.
Eclipse Audio 5423 HU
H/O Alternator built by Detroit alternators
15" Resonant Engineering XXX
0 Gauge
Optima Yellow Top
150ft Second Skin Damplifier
CDT Audio 151a's 6.5 Components/Silk Tweeters
Directed Audio 2400D (true clean watts)
Soundstream Van Gogh Amp
I was able to hit 143.4 on a termlab (I think that is what they were called)

I miss going to the dB Drags. It seems like that scene is kind of dying off now. A lot of people don't want to mess around with these newer systems that car companies are putting in.

You have to wonder if the anti-rice movement (or whatever it is called) has helped this happened.
It seems that people are all way focused on the speed aspect and the fun of the interior/styling/systems is gone. I always thought there was a place for all of it but - if anyone has something done to their car that isn't speed - it gets called rice.
The most style that happens now is donks.
I'm sorry but some of the old school lowriders people built up back in the early 90's were damn nice. A little overboard and cheese but such good work you could not deny it.

Yeah, I've never been a big fan of gaudy builds, but man, the time and effort some of these guys put into their cars were incredible. While now, I like parts that are all about function, I still miss having a loud system in my car. I still have some of my old equipment and I keep toying with the idea of putting it in the wagon. I just remember how expensive that bug is when it bites......

If you saw the van you would understand lol. It has the potential to do alot higher, but they set it up so that you can listen to it as well.
What 2400D amp do you have? How long is it?

It has been long gone and lost in the mail. I bought it back on ikesound.com YEARS ago. DEI got bought out and re released another 2400D that wasn't rated at what it should had been. I'd say 18-22 inches??? long. I have pictures of it when I blew some caps somewhere.

Yeah I asked about the 2400d because the later one was just a rebadged 1200d. The first one, like you had was essentially two 1200d's in one case, but they didn't last very long. I went through a few of them. Was the XXX you had just as old? If the sub was one of the newer ones you had/have no where near enough power going to it. If it was one of the first/older ones it would've been fine.

The 10w7 still have excellent sql. I do have some 6w0s that are begging to have a box built for them. Haha

A Cavalier that beats. Nah, its still a cavalier. My mother drives a Cavalier. I wish she would let me wreck it for her. I would put the motor in a golf cart, junk the body, and use the other parts for metal fabrications later like work bench legs, coffee tables, etc. Hell, I might even beat up a honda civic with old cavalier parts. Thats what I call killing two birds with one stone.

It's more about the system and not the car.

I can see how you would immediately think that. But if that is the case, then why have the car in the factor to begin with? How about just have a system? Set it up in a garage, open the door, plenty of room for 15's in there, hook up your amplifiers on a workbench, take pictures, and post it up on here. Or, Put your system in a lambo. Would you drill holes or remove interior pieces out of a lambo to install a system? Its not about the car right?
I know I wouldn't. I have had vehicles with extravagent systems before. Allow me to show you.
1972 Dodge Dart (fully restored) - Did NOT have a system
1978 Impala (Fully restored)- Had a system
1989 Dodge Ramcharger (Fully Restored)- Did NOT have a system
1969 Ford F-100 (Fully Restored)- Did NOT have a system
1991 Dodge Ramcharger - Did NOT have a system
2002 Subaru WRX Sti- Had a system
1998 GMC Yukon 4x4- Did Not have a system
1994 Honda Civic Dx- Did Not have a system
1998 Ford F-150- Did NOT have a system
1986 Ford F-150- Did NOT have a system
2001 Ford F-250- Did NOT have a system
Volkswagen Golf GTI- Had a system
1978 Ford Bronco - Did Not have a system
and there ya go

Odd response.....
Notice when you go to a car audio show, the focus isn't so much on the car, but what the owner or builder has turned the car into with their skills in car audio and video. Yes, the car is an integral part of it, but make and model are much less of an issue than the quality of work and components put into the sound system. So when you say "A Cavalier that beats. Nah, it's still just a Cavalier", then you've missed the point.

I can understand your point, at audio shows the focus is not as much on the car as much the sound system itself and the quality and integrity of the workmanship, but no painter would use a shitty canvas

You're right, no painter would want to use a shitty canvas. A real artist however would be able to use anything to achieve the results desired. Same holds true in car audio.

Did you really come onto the audio subforum to diss a car I owned 6 years ago that had a nice system?

Well if you put it that way... yes I did, I told myself "fintheman had a shitty accord 6 years ago that had a nice system... so I am going to go into the audio/video subforum and dis the car."
Because I knew that, I give a shit whether you own or owned the car and when you owned it and what it had done to it.
Your an idiot.
Again, I will state that my point was to merely pose a debate on the "canvas" chosen for such modifications. Don't make this into a political pity battle over the emotionally abused Cavalier.

This is a unique observation. But not necessarily true. It depends on the owner.

If you're (notice the spelling) going to call someone an idiot, make sure you don't do it by saying "your an idiot".

Termlab was created by Rockford Fosgate great Wayne Harris. His bio is here: http://www.termpro.com/showcars/index.asp
Most of the old school stuff was done on Coustic or AudioControl RTA's, if you are indeed talking "old school" as in back in my day (mid 90's). The Term Labs machines came in more towards early to mid 2k.
(DB Drag started in 1997 so from there forward for DB competitions I guess, though I started in audio in 93).

09-28-2010, 06:13 PM
Comp is just a money game now. The old IASCA DB drags went out when it became more about the money builds and less about the spirit of competition and getting together with the neighborhood to throw down. Once it lost it's truly "fun" spirit I bailed.
