View Full Version : Pick out a bike for me...

Background. New bike rider. Never ridden more than like a scooter or moped. I know I want a 'crotch rocket' type bike, but no more than a 600. I have $4,000 to spend. I think my favorite looking bike is the cbr600. The bike would only be ridden for pleasure, on the weekends.
If anyone is bored, can you go to craigslist and pickout what you would purchase based on the above?
Thanks!

Pretty much what everyone else recommended would make a decent starting bike. Try and stay away from an inline four supersport for your first bike. Your best bet would be sticking with a parallel twin, such as: Ninja 250/500/650, Suzuki SV650, Suzuki GS500, Buell Blast.

I really like my bike, it was my first.....but if I had it to do over again I'd probably go with a CBR600 or an R6, early 2000's for my first bike. Nice, handle well, feel great, have power but not too much for someone with sense, and affordable

Well, if you're just going to be cruising around town/to and from work, and such, get whatever you want. But, if you want to actually learn how to ride a bike properly start small. You'll end up a much better rider for it.

Yeah I like the look of the 250s over the 600s and 1000s.. I dunno, I guess when I was old enough to get a bike it was in the early 2000s and so thats the kind of style I like, and that's what the 250rs look like.
You can buy a brand new one for around $3800 otd IIRC.

I 2nd this^
Honestly, the decision is up to you, but dont be that guy that buys a bike to extend their penis and look cool. If you absolutely must have a 600, buy an older bike. Parts are cheaper and it wont be as expensive to repair when you drop it. Go sit on a bunch of different bikes and see what you like.
Also, is your 4k budget strictly for the bike, or are you totally neglecting the thought of purchasing gear, insurance, any maintenance you will need to perform on a used bike?

4k is strictly for the bike. Im not an 18 year old kid. Im 28 year old with a career, so I have money for all of the other stuff as well. The reason im not going for an older bike, quite frankly, is because I like the styling of a more modern bike. Im not buying the bike to race or stunt or anything like that. Im buying it for the weekend when its nice outside and to cruise.

250 is worth the money. You won't get the 'cool' factor, but at least you'll have a nice starting bike.

250 can do highway speeds fine, and they have the best resell value of any bike. It's a great starting bike and you won't get laughed at for your chicken strips on one.
Why do you want a race replica for cruising? Have you ever sat on one for long periods of time? They are torture racks.

not to mention a brand new 250R is $4k ... so you can get a brand new beginners bike for cheap, and then when you actually know how to ride well you can upgrade to something like a CBR600 (at least thats what id do)

Because I like the way they look. Yeah, I said it, I dont care. Millions of people ride them everyday. I know I wont be happy with a 250.

Why would you buy any "brand new" bike to learn on? There's a good chance you're gonna drop it at least once.....get one that's already depreciated.

Since this thread got bumped, if you still haven't bought one, I went CBR600 right out of the gates for my first bike. Ended up selling it and want a Ninja 250 (08+). It's a LOT more fun to ride a smaller bike to 100% of it's potential and not feel like I'm going to die versus riding a supersport to 40% of it's potential and feeling like I'm flirting with death. As a new rider you're not nearly good enough and don't have the skill set to take advantage of a supersport. I really wish I had gone Ninja 250 out of the gates.
With that said, I'll be buying another bike. Two actually. One will be a Ninja 250 for when I want to ride for fun. The other will be a Yamaha FZ6 or even FZ1 for when my wife and I want to do some 2-up riding. It won't be my "fun" bike though. The little Ninja 250 will be. Small bikes are so much fun to ride balls to the wall on, and you don't feel like death is right around the corner.

united motors which is hyosung has been in the motorcycle industry for 10-20 years serving as a contractor for Suzuki/kawasaki and others in other countries. about 4 years ago they went into production with their own name and design. ive had the bike for around 6 months now its a pretty awesome bike. Ive had a ninja 250 several years ago and i would say don't get one, not because they suck but because in a few months you will be waiting around for some one to buy it so you can upsize to something a little bigger. Like with my bike, its a 600 bike but in any gear i can gun it and the front wheel will stay down so that makes it a little more comfortable for someone to ride it with its powerband spread out so evenly but dont get me wrong its a fast bike but it doesn't have to be ridden like one to have fun on it.

+1 for SV 650. i like'm naked, you'll prolly want the s model with fairings. its been mentioned before, but ill say it again. buy your gear first! neutral colors so it doesnt have to match your bike; it'll match everything, and you'll already have it. its an old thread so I hope everything works out if it hasnt already. shiny side up.
