After a lightning storm at my house one day this happened to both of the ps3's in my house. One upstairs one down, both were on surge protectors and everything and one of them even fried the same HDMI port in the TV that the ps3 was hooked up to. Neither of the ps3s were even on during the storm which is bullshit but whatever. Sucks man, I feel your pain.

TO OP:

Have you done the Soft Reset? (Hold power button down for like 10+ seconds). What is audio going through? A sound system, or the same HDMI?

You don't seem to be familiar with how surge protectors work.

They don't prevent your electronic devices from getting surges even if your "ps3 is not on."

Electricity flows through it constantly, the rate of consumption is what differs when it's on/off. A varistors MAIN function is to conduct significantly increased current when voltage is excessive. Varistors (commonly known as Voltage Dependent Resistors) are usually used to protect circuits against excessive voltages by incorporating them into the circuit in such a way that when triggered they will direct the current created by the high voltaged (lightning, etc..) away from the components.

Typically MOST surge protectors don't use ceramic (Metal Oxide) varistors (BAD!!!) and a lot of them are coated in plastic (Can you say fire hazard waiting to happen?). This is why cheap ass 5-10$ "surge protectors" are really nothing more than "power strips."

But, aside from that lesson, What I meant to get to is: Lightning strikes cut power to a house typically. When electricity is reestablished, the surge protector is hit with a HIGH amount of joules and typically fries components. The ONLY way to ensure this does not happen is to invest in dual circuitry surge protectors (Monster FTW!!) and/or unplug your components from any outlet/surge protector until power is restored. Typically, this years line up of Monster Surge protectors (775G series and up) will have a mode that will automatically disconnect ALL circuits in the event of erratic electricity flow. This can be picked up for about $50-60 at your local best buy.

Electronic stores sell $99-$300+ "power centers" for a reason. Also, I would recommend staying away from a battery backup unless you HAD to have it (hard drive sensitive data), and even then you need to turn off your PC and disconnect it.

If anything, you need a Monster Green Power surge protector 775G or greater for any system that is going to be used with a TV/PS3//Surround Sound/Blu-Ray, etc.

It's a fairly common problem, and the HDMI chipset can go bad. Try using to the regular a/v cables.

yeah i used the regular av cables for a round or two and was done. After playing on my 46" 1080 sony lcd for 8 months I can't play ps3 in non-HDMI mode. lol

I guess we'll see, I've only had the tv and ps3 for 8 months. so it should still be under warranty I would think (the ps3 )

Get the component cables. They hook up the same as the AV cables but will allow for HD. You can get em for like 10 or 15 bucks at the game store

the component cables will support Hi-Def? Will it be as good as hdmi?

I'm going to see if I can find the receipt and see if Sony will repair it.

The "5" av cables are HD.

8months, it better be under warranty. Don't forget to reset it by holding the power button for about 10 sec to reset to video output.

Already tried that. I went to game stop and bought some hd comp cables for the time being. $15
