AaronD (http://www.tennspeed.net/forums/member.php?u=2022) and boosted s14.5 v2 (http://www.tennspeed.net/forums/member.php?u=2284) bought a powder coating kit & an oven, so we grabbed some spare parts and started doing some powder coating...
the powders (and a couple bottles of flake) - starting off with the basics [matte black, gloss white, red, yellow]:

several new colors were ordered tonight, unfortunately the oven is only about 15"x15" inside ... once we get into it, we will build a bigger oven though

if you dont mind me asking, what kind of prices did you throw out for the powder gun kit? and where would a guy find one?? are you ordering the colors off the net?
cus man it looks pretty simple and could certainly make some easy money on the side

There is 3 major factors that are needed for powder coating.
1. Media Blaster
2. Powder Gun
3. Oven
They are actually pretty inexpensive. My older brother and I were going to go in together and buy one but just could find enough room to put all three at.

Mitch's favorite place has 2 different powder coat kits w/ several colors....it's simple if you get the part clean and have a big oven.

I think they got the harbor freight kit cause those powder cans look like the harbor freight ones.

correct, it is the harbor freight kit andx some of their powder they have. The powder surprisingly lays very well and we've had no issues from it. Just bought a bunch of other powder last night and will be making a bigger oven soon so we can do wheelsthat are decent size.
Chris, the crower snapped in half due to improper specs when attempting to install. User error ftl, but live and learn from it all.

yup ... the powders we have now are harbor freight since we wanted to see if this would even work, and its working great so far - the new powders that are being ordered are much nicer however
we've had the media blaster for a while ... now its finally getting use
if anyone needs small parts done in any color, just let us know and we'd be happy to help

you have to completely disassemble calipers to powder coat them so that you don't damage the seals & fasteners with the heat or the powder ... just fyi

Can you use a kitchen oven to cure this stuff?
And do you use some sort of clear coat after you cure it?
Jose-Aka-Pedro
01-09-2011, 12:09 AM
You don't really want to use a kitchen oven, remember the exhaust tube for the typical Electric Oven is routed from either under one of the Eyes, Or just out of the top from the back. So the Fumes would engulf (idk I made that up,) your house.
But sweet guys, I def would like some stuff done
Now I need to think of things for you guys to powder coat for me.

Have you looked into doing primer at all? It really helps when you're working on porous aluminum.

all of my powdercoating was a 3 stage job. consisted of the primer powdercoat he was talking about then silver base and then the final blue color.
The primer really does make a big difference imo. definitely a plus with porous aluminum.
