Looking to pick up a 4-wheeler. Don't know anything about them. There are tons of them on Craigslist, but since I'm a newb, I don't want to pay too much for the wrong ATV.
What I need it for:
* Mostly fooling around on trails, open fields, my neighborhood streets.
* Back-up bugout vehicle should the SHTF and my truck is no bueno.
* I think I want 4wd but I could be convinced either way
I'm sort of leaning towards an older one, but mainly because I don't want something made in China. I'd consider a newer one if I could be sure it wasn't Chinese.

From my experience go with a manual transmission. I used an auto one and the AT fried!!! Probably bc of how hard it was driven!! Go with 4wd if you think you will need it, I've only had to use it in mud and then when I was climbing a hill and was sliding in 2wd! And then I would recommend a Polaris or a Honda, just bc I've used both of them before and have no complaints except for the Honda AT!

Honda, top of the line in quality and reliability, no questions asked.
With that said, depends on what size you want. If you plan on riding a lot and with other folks you'll probably end up wanting something bigger down the road. I used to never say this, but get one with electric shift or automatic, they are a lot more fun. Go ahead and spend the money for 4wd, you'll want it later, especially if you start playing in mud.
I have a 680 Rincon, and I love it. I wouldn't trade it for anything, it has pretty much everything you would want, but it's a little pricey..
Also independent rear suspension is amazing, I'd you can afford it, get one with it. You will NEVER regret buying one with it.

Oh, and Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki, and Yamaha are going to be your top Japanese brands.. I'm still not sold on Polaris being a quality product, and am not sure of Can-Ams yet, but I'm old school and usually stick to what I know.
Tlrmade- I've owned quite a few Honda autos, and never had any issues with them. Could possibly be laid in with the oil that had been used, I know certain oils contain detergents that will eat the clutches up. But we won't go into and oil frenzy right now.
Biggest question, how much do you want to spend?

I'd say your right on the oil bc I don't believe it was very well maintained before. Haha I drove it until it wouldn't even move!

I have a 2011 Honda rancher 420 electric shift 4x4. I'm about 275lbs and it has plenty of power pulling and climbing up hills. If you decide on a 4x4... Make sure it's selectable.... All time 4x4 doesn't turn for shit.

You gotta decide what you want to do with it. I for one don't car for mud bogging so there is no need for 4wd. I like to go fast, power slide and jump some so my choice is a sport ATV. I have a 99 Yamaha Banshee. It's hell on wheels and tries to hurt me whenever I ride it. It's fast(90mph more or less depending on gear) handles well and jumps decent but riding it will wear you out real fast compared to a 4 stroke sport quad.

Ever thought about a side by side? They are very capable too and can carry a bit more gear. My father-in-law just got a Yamaha Rhino 660 for us to play around on and it's a blast (except when I flipped it and broke my sister in law's wrist...). I have yet to get it stuck and have gone through some serious mud, even in 2wd. I'm still looking at getting an ATV too. Probably a Polaris.

I like cheap. I dont ride enough to justify buying a $3k fourwheeler. I have a recon and a 250ex. They are small and I have very little in them. Great in the woods and do fine in most shallow mud. Plenty of power for having fun. I ride a 500 foreman often as well. Lots of power, much larger and heavier. Great for doubling. I never put it in 4wd. It is fun, but i prefer the smaller ones, especially when it comes to price. You should ride several different ones and see what you prefer.. I have been riding honda atvs since 1984. Quality has gone down some since then, but they are still one of the best companies imo.

sure......I keep it at my in-laws house in Springfield. They have tons of places to ride out there like woods, revines, rivers and all kinds of mudholes.

Dumbest post award.
I don't believe this guy is wanting anything race related, even though a Banshee is one of the last things that come to mind when thinking of race 4wheelers. Banshees are one of the most outdated 4wheelers ever.. Even back in 87 when they had j-arms instead of a-arms.
I don't believe a banshee has any purpose for this guy from what he has stated, especially if he knows nothing about them.
Utilities are nowheres near what they used to be, they have really stepped up over the years.. That also doesn't mean I want miss my 450f or 250r, but it's all good.
