Hey guys I'm about to begin the rebuild of my SR for my 240SX. I was wondering if anyone has had motor work done in the Nashville area, if so do yall know of anyone familiar with the SR block? Anyone that has done a build up/rebuild and has any advice on the swap I would greatly appreciate your insight.
PS hope to have 300whp daily driver (for now)

If just shooting for 300 why are you building just of of curiosity?

(for now) lol by for now i meant for the time being aka phase 1 of the build
I plan to have a tough as nails block so i can add bolt-ons in the future as funds become available. And this way i don't have to worry about pulling a motor/trans down the road, which will save me a lot of effort as well as time off the road. IDK if the logic seems right to others but i figure this way i don't have to worry about anything i throw at the SR later on, just wanna be able to drive with that peace of mind.

Alright what are you planning as that will make all the difference. I mean 400rwhp, 450rwhp, 600rwhp?
If your going to go real big then you need to have a plan.

Realistically I'm looking for a streetable 350-375whp for the future maybe even 400 someday. But i'm going to start with a solid motor and just crank the boost up as i feel the need lol, i know I'd love to have huge numbers but i don't want a high rpm powerband that comes with big turbos and more power. Not saying its a bad thing i would just like a more usable powerband and be able to daily drive it but also auto cross or drift. I know yall wil probably bash me for it but I'd rather have an overbuilt motor that i don't have to worry about blowing or pulling it out to do another rebuild when i decide to go with bigger power. I just say better safe than sorry and be able to drive your car hard without fear of blowing it

just put a block guard in it if your worried...but i ran a constant 350ish give or take on my sr with stock internals....as long as u keep enough oil in it and dont redline it youll be fine with the #'s your talking about...

This is the funnest thing I've ever heard!!! But it is cool, I've got this 4G63 I'm going to get sleeved later when I build it so it is strong!!!
Back on topic, as far as a machine shop there are several out there for a mild build, if you looking to get someone to prep a block for a build understand what it is you want done.
Pick a set of pistons I'd say go 87mm with eagle rod. The pistons will make it very clear how to hone and bore the block for proper piston to wall clearance. Stock bearings will do you fine, bump up a size clearance though as the stock clearances are very tight. If you have a redtop make sure you have the updated pick up and swap the waterpump while your in there. As far as beck you can take up to 8 thousands and make sure you get a very smooth surface for your new MLS gasket, Apex'i 1.1-0.8mm only. ARP head studs with out the taper (1.8T version) buy these new and tighten to 80ft.lb.
Head prep (RPM will be good for this), since it is a part clean it up valve job 3-angle is fine, seals, and absolutely some exhaust valve guides plus intake guides if you can. Give it a mild deck same as the block. Bleed your HLA real well and check your shim heights if it is ticking the way it is now find some new HLA out of the later SR20 versions. As far as cams you can use a set of HKS step-1 264 as they will offer a good compromise on power and mid-range and daily driving.
The above motor combination will be way over built for less then 400rwhp, it could easily handle up to 550rwhp with a big turbo and bigger cams.
IF your a baller and have money to burn Mazworx in Florida will build you a built proof Motor that can handle up to 1000rwhp or more.

I really appreciate the info man I'm trying to do this build up the right way< don't wanna take any short cuts at all and your post is a big help.
I'm not lookin for 1000whp and I'm def not baller status but i would like to have a near built proof motor so that I don't have to worry. What are the most common and easiest upgrades as far as misc motor parts? I know whater pump thermostat and some people use GTI-R bearings correct? Anything else i should know?
S14 James

Some use GTi-R bearings but you don't need them unless you want extra insurance. I've used both now and unless your shooting for +500rwhp just use stock 17mm bearings.
You can build the shit out of any motor but if you don't have a good tune it won't matter.
If your going to stay under 450, then i would do this:
Forged Pistons, JE, CP, Wiseco whatever
Fresh bearings per the FSM but sized bumped up on clearance size
Waterpump
New design Oil pickup
Oil Pump Greddy Oil pan
ARP Headstuds
Apex'i Headgasket 1.1mm
Clean up the head, shim, seals, valve job, valve guides, new HLAs
HKS Step-1 264 cam set
Top it off with a GT3071R twin scroll and the required bolt-ons and done.

Yes thanks S14 James, I was looking for someone to help me. I am ready to build this motor, just need to decide what parts to buy and wait for shipping lol. Anyone know of machine shops in the Boro or greater Nashville? Still need to get the SR to a shop, it may be awhile but i think it will be worth the wait.
