I've got a few quick questions about this particular generation.

1. Would it make a good drift car?
2. How much should I expect to pay for one in decent condition?
3. How hard are they to work on?
4. What are common engine swaps for this generation?

just get a 240 .... it would be a terrible drift car
you want to drift a toyota, get an AE86 or a supra :)

its not a great platform at all ... only thing good about them is those 22-R/22-RE engines are bulletproof like most toyota 4cyls

Thanks for the answers. I just thought it would be cool to have a rwd Celica.... I am looking to get into drifting though, and I do wanna stick with toyota. I guess I'll check out the older Supras and the ae86 'rolla, although I have a feeling that those might be a little bit out of my price range.

AE86s are cheap ... especially if you get one that hasnt been heavily modded

as far as supras go, Mk3s are cheap ... Mk4s arent, obviously

1. It could. There's nothing inherently wrong with it. Either the solid axle ST/GT or the IRS GT-S could work fine. It's 200-300lbs heavier than the AE86, but it has a stronger chassis. Unfortunately the IRS on the GT-S is a rather primitive semi-trailing arm setup.

2. Not much. Convertibles bring the most, and you don't really want that. Watch out for rust, though. These rust pretty bad, if they've spent any time in the North or were neglected.

3. Not at all. They are very simple cars with plenty of space in the engine bay.

4. 22RT-E from the pickup is a solid motor that is a direct bolt in. With a little work, it can make some good power. The 3T-GTE (or the homologation 4T-GTE) was used in Japan, but it would be very difficult to find parts for it here. There was also the 18R-GE, but it probably wouldn't be worth the trouble of locating one. Some people have squeezed the 7M in it, but it's a tight fit. It's even tighter to try to squeeze a JZ motor in, but it's been done. Some have also swapped the 1UZ in it, but both the JZ and UZ require a fair bit of fabrication work.

I don't really know the answers to your questions, but an '84 Celica ST was my first car years ago. It was a hand me down from my mom.

Nice looking car, but it was pretty slow. Of course, I didn't have any performance mods on it back then. I sold it to my friend when it started burning more oil than gas (I told him up front that it was burning a ton of oil). He used it for a few years and did some cosmetic stuff to it. Took the coil springs entirely out to 'slam it', iirc.

AE86 or Supra...or go home.
Unless its a MkIV, I wouldn't recommend it. MKII's semi trailing arm rear suspension make for difficult to control drifts with extreme camber curves and toe out problems in compression. MkIII's are just too heavy and not very well balanced.

Mk3's weight distribution is actually slightly better than the Mk4, and in turbo trim, weighs less than 100lbs more. The Mk4's biggest advantage is a more rigid chassis and a much better stock motor. I wouldn't expect either to be great for drifting, though.

You could go for an older Celica. My personal favorite is the RA29 liftback. I'm pretty sure AE86 parts will fit them. They use the same transmissions, as well, so you could likely bolt a 4A-GE/GZE and bellhousing up to the transmission, throw a GTS Corolla rear end in it, some struts, and have a decent car to play with. Can't beat the looks, either.
