Please critique my future setup....

I want quad core AMD for sure and I also want an Nvidia so all you intel and ati fanboys don't be shitting up my thread :)

Teh List:

Nvidia 9800 GTX - 512 megs of DDR3

AMD Phenom 9750 2.4 GHz quadcore

4 Gigs of OCZ ram

Haven't decided on the motherboard yet, suggestions appreciated :)

you will LOVE the video card ;)i have that same one in this rig and it is phenomenal.

and i'm an intel guy, but i have nothing against the phenom, excellent cpu.

you're gonna need some power though :p i'd suggest AT LEAST 650 watts.

check out TigerDirect.com if you haven't already, best deals i've ever seen for pc parts ;)

yeah I just listed the key components, should get a nice fat powersupply to go along with it all. I've built a few comps already but I just wanted to make sure the components I chose so far live up to their ratings.
yeah i know what you're saying, i was just saying with all of that already, when it comes to buying the ps, you'll need a lot :p

good luck with your build! sounds like a beast already :p

btw, XFX and Azus makes the best motherboards in the market :p check out some reviews.
I was ready to come in here and be a gigantic intel fanboi, but the 9750 does seem to offer a lot of performance compared to intels in the same price range.

yeah I've heard good things about that CPU. I'm an AMD guy :)
any reasoning behind that? (just curious)

Built my first comp back in middle school about 5 or 6 years ago and back then AMDs were drastically cheaper and had similar performance. Guess it just stuck. Every comp I've built for myself has some flavor of AMD in it and I've always been satisfied :)

I do, however, own a macbook with an intel core 2 duo lol
hahhaha alright i can't argue with that :p

i used to have an Athlon x2, it ran fine, but i find my Pentium DC MUCH more productive.

but i know for a fact that the phenom is absolutely stellar, you'll be happy with it ;)

Yeah I've never used a multi core AMD so we'll see how this runs. My macbook runs great with the intel dual core.

I just wish more software developers would take advantage or multi cores.....can you image a game actually using all 4 cores at once? rape stick
I was an AMD guy through and through. Unfortunately, Intel and their current offering changed that. Not only are they better chip for chip, but if you really want to overclock and get the most out of it, Intel all the way.

I don't follow bandwagons. I buy smart.

If you really want to be smart, wait around a bit for the new series of Intel chips. That would be the time to buy, and they are right around the corner.

If I wait will I get a quadcore intel CPU that's >2.4GHz for $160?
x2 to what vent said

lol @ quad core and SLI ... waste of $$ because you wouldnt even max out a dual core with todays games, programs, or whatever ...

eventually i gotta rebuild my main rig ... still rockin the Pentium 4 3GHz w/ HyperThreading, 1.5GB RAM, and a Sapphire Radeon X1650 512MB card ... but it runs super-cool and it can run anything i currently do more than fine ... but since the motherboard is Socket 478, i basically need new everything once i upgrade to dual core ... prolly get an Intel E8500 (core 2 duo 3.16GHz) or something similar

the reason ive kept my P4 so long is that i can actually USE the 3GHz whereas if i had some cheap dual core 2.0GHz i would be using one of the two cores most of the time and it would actually be slower, or if faster, not enough to justify the cost

i also need to buy a DVD+RW drive and some SATA HDs because my C:\ is 18.6 gig and my D:\ is 160 gig but only has like 130 usable because i never formatted it properly ... lolz

I AM going to build a quad core machine with an Nvidia card. Not sure if you read the first post. I will look at intel chips if someone posts some factual info like benchmarks with a similar setup to mine but "lol @ quadcore and SLI" doesn't really make me want to change my mind.

But minty, you uneducated piece of shit, why do you want to buy a quadcore when most of the power wouldn't be used? Well condescending voice, I want a quadcore mainly because of the expandability with linux (linux actually can be made to use all 4 cores unlike winblows) along with fact that it would stay "up to par" longer than anything else....Especially if I over clock it.
i am not trying to change your mind ... you could build a custom processor for all i care, its not my computer or my money

but even if you run linux (which really doesnt make sense for a main rig ... never has, never will) - what are you gonna be doing that will require a quad core that couldnt be done better than average with a dual core?
With a little bit of knowledge you could clock a sub-$200 Intel chip to well over 3.0ghz. I've been doing it for over a year.
Benchmarks here:

http://www.anandtech.com/printarticle.aspx?i=3272

Intel Q6600 would be your ideal chip, less than $200, outperforms the chip you mentioned, and can overclock well over 3.0ghz easy, where overclocking most of the AMD Quad cores past 3.0ghz is very, very difficult, if at all possible.

Not trying to ride bandwagons here, just think you should buy smart
well said vent...
Technically, if you build an AMD some of the additional parts may be cheaper. Motherboard may be cheap..

But whats the point? You mentioned future proofing, right? Quad core overclocked to 3.4+ ghz, maybe even 3.6ghz on air, with a $60 cooler... thats going to hold you over for awhile.

Unfortunately, the next line of Intel chips will bring the prices down even more and push the performance to an even greater degree. So waiting is a good option.
and when all is said and done ... your games will look great, but you'll still lose :-D
