Ok, I have an old HP that we don't use anymore so I was gonna load Ubuntu and take it college with me, but the computer won't boot from a cd. I have replaced the cd driver so could it be that the Bios isn't recognizing the cd drive? If so, what can I do to make it recognize it, or is there any other way to boot linux?

EDIT: the only way i've installed ubuntu was through xp.

do what techy said and see if that helps any.
Either the cable is going bad or your BIOS is set to boot from the hard drive first. Get into the BIOS and reset the boot order to have the CD Drive first then the Hard Drive.
its an HP pavilion 533w, intel celeron CPU 2.00 GHz, 256 mb of ram, XP
need to know anything else? thats pretty much all I could find on it

Ok, so I'm a noob when it comes to BIOS stuff, how can I do that?
well every motherboard company has it's own way of doing this (azus' way is different from kds etc etc...)

but this is normally how it goes...
Turn the PC on and immediately start tapping the DELETE or DEL key. Keep tapping this (approx 2/3 times a second will suffice) until a menu appears. This is the BIOS. Use the LEFT/RIGHT arrow keys on the keyboard to move along the upper menu until you highlight BOOT. The boot device list will appear (There may be a pause before this list appears) Press the + (Plus symbol) on the keypad (far right on keyboard) to move the ATAPI CD-ROM or floppy disk heading up the list.
bottom line, get to the boot settings and somehow get it to set cd-rom as number 1 priority.
My buddy was over here and I think he tried this, but it still wouldn't boot from, I'll try that again when i get his cd back, but could it be anything else?
are your jumpers placed in correctly?

also, can you boot into xp at all?
my what? lol

And yeah, I can boot into xp fine, and the cd drive works fine, it just won't boot from it
lol between the ide port (the fat one) and the dc port (the one with 4 pins) is a space to put in jumpers.

this is SOMETIMES a problem...my old pavillion was very picky about that so i was just wondering.
like, the computer runs fine, I just wanted to put Ubuntu on there instead

i KNOW theres a way to just install ubuntu within xp, a friend of mine did it on my laptop...

i just remember he needed a weird program to make it work...i'll shoot him an email and ask him for you if you want.
Yeah, do that. Thanks.
But in the meantime im gonna keep trying to boot it.
My buddy took the cd with him, but I copied everything into a folder on my other computer and I heard where you can boot from a usb drive? is that hard?
it's likely the same way i'm talking about.

i'm not gonna lie, i hate linux  so i don't pay much attention to it.

this is just something i did for shits and giggles on my laptop.

i emailed him btw. let me know if you get anything working ;)
ok cool, thanks.
But like I already tried changing the boot prioriety so i don't know what else to do. My buddy said it could be that since I had to replace the cd drive, the BIOS doesn't even recognize it because it doesn't have the correct drivers, but were both just throwing out stuff
Burn a new copy of Ubuntu.

I think its a waste to run it anyways, you're denying yourself decent software. That is, unless you just want to play around and dual boot XP. You're reducing the functionality of your laptop, as far as the -average- user goes. Most freeware/shareware applications in Linux are shit. Don't give me that crap about Gimp and all those other BS programs. And if you're going to run Wine, why not just run Windows?

This isn't on my main laptop, this is just on an old desktop we dont use and I just wanted to play around with linux and see what I could do. I'm just wanting to use to actually do work or anything.

And I know its not the CD because it boots fine on other computers.
random question but, have you checked out ubuntuforums.org?
Alittle, Ill keep looking on there tho.
