Came across this earlier, I was reading about speed cameras, we have quite an abundance of them here in some parts of Texas, but primarily just stop light cameras. Heres a video I came across regarding these new photo radars going up in AZ. You don't have to watch it, but this is the link:

For those not in the photography world, thats an L lens, made by Canon that costs over $1000, I believe a 70-200 F2.8 non-IS. After reading, I've confirmed that they do in fact use plenty of them, as well as other L lenses, and match them up with proprietary camera systems.

I've also found out that the small boxes you see over red lights usually have 50mm f1.4 lenses mounted, usually a Canon variant as well. These aren't quite as expensive, though... approximately $400 or so.
