I have a Tamron 28-75 f2.8, and its pretty similar to the 17-50, just different focal length. Both are -excellent- lenses. Some of their zooms leave a little to be desired, though.
I have a Tamron 28-200 for my D50. It actually is a film lens, but I shoot with my D50 a lot more than my film SLR. I notice a difference between it and other lenses, but a lot of people can not.
The Tamron 17-50 f2.8 or 28-75 f2.8 will take a photo as sharp as any lens twice its cost. Other Tamron lenses have not blown me away to the extent of those two lenses.
The only thing I wish the 28-75 had was a little better focus speed.
