Personally, for me, this is the holy grail. That one elusive car that I will ALWAYS dream about, and drool over at shows. The Boss 429 Mustang is probably one of the most sought after, and revered muscle cars from the muscle era of the late 1960's.

With new NASCAR regulations stating that to use an engine in a NASCAR stock car in it's races, the manufacturer of the motor had to use the motors in a commercially available car, with a minimum of 500 units to be produced for the engine to be used. With it's new semi-circle cylinder head and combustion chamber design after NASCAR outlawed Mopar's HEMI motors, Ford needed to place this new motor into a street worthy car. In 1969, they decided that the famous Mustang, now in it's 5th year of production, would be the carrier of this new motor.

So Ford then produced (for the 1969 and 1970 model years) 1,358 428 Cobra Jet Mach 1 Mustangs to be sent to Dearborn, Michigan based Kar Kraft for the nessecary modifications to fit the new motor into the Mustang chassis. In order to get the motor to fit, Kar Kraft had to widen the front shock towers, as well as move the front radiator core support, and lengthen the fenders to enable the motor to fit without clearance issues. In addition, a hole was cut in the hood and a manual controlled hood scoop was added to these cars.

The only external give away that the Boss 429 had a little extra something lurking under the hood, were the front fender decals, which prominently displayed, "BOSS 429".

In all, in 1969, 859 Boss 429's were built. There were five different colors to choose from (Raven Black, Wimbledon White, Royal Maroon, Candyapple Red, and Black Jade) and the only color you could have in the interior was black. The hood scoop was painted the same color as the car,and all these cars were a manual transmission and there was no air conditioning available due to large size of the engine.

As well as in 1970, 499 Boss' made their way to dealerships. There were five new exterior colors introduced in addition to the previous 5 (Grabber Orange, Grabber Green, Grabber Blue, Colypso Coral, and Pastel Blue) and the interior was available in White or Black. The hood scoops for this year were all painted black regardless of the color of the car. (Which is the only way, externally, that you can tell the 2 years apart). These cars also had a manual transmission as standard, with no automatic as an option, and you still couldn't have A/C.

Very sexy...although the 67 Mustang GT500 "Eleanor" will always have a soft spot for me...it's one of my favorite cars of all time.
Hemi-head Ford FTW
Beautiful car, but I'd have to agree w/Brad that the '69 Shelby GT500 will always have my heart when it comes to the Stangs
