I need a wide angle... here are my selections to choose from.

Canon 10-22 3.5-5.6f USM ~$749.99
Sigma 10-20 4-5.6f ~$459.99

Which one and why?

And what exactly does USM (Ultra Sonic Motor) mean in reference to Canon glass? I am ASSUMING that it has something to do with the autofocus motor.

Sigma is cheaper.

IQ is pretty much the same. The Canon is better, but.. not by enough to be noticeable in most cases.

The difference between the two could get you most of a Tamron 17-50 f.28 as well...
I have the sigma 10-20 wide angle for my nikon d50. I love it!!! And yeah, its how quiet the motor works. I can barely hear my sigma focus. Its fast and super quiet.

Word... I just picked up the Sigma after I made this and talked with James a bit... here is one shot from it... just shooting around, not really trying:

So stay tuned for some good shots this week/weekend...

long run, sigmas are going to go soft on you faster. i had sigma lenses and after three or four years they were turning out foggy stuff. you can buy two sigmas for the canon but the canon will last twice as long.

the motor is prolly referring to how fast the motor is going to focus
