Turbo b16 dying when warm

1977 Views 28 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  spoolie
I have a turbo b16 setup that i just finished and once its warmed up when driving around when ever i get out of the throttle to slow down and the clutch is in the car shuts off on me. i was messing with the fuel pressure regulator taking the vacuum line off of the intake mani and when i do it doesnt die everytime i press in the clutch to slow down. it did once but not every single time like before. could this be that my fuel pressure regulator is bad or what else could cause this?

is this tuned?
its tuned for a turbo b16 with the same map sensor and injectors but not for the rest of this setup yet. my tuner can get to it til next weekend

and nismojunkie will a big turbo keep a motor from not idling correctly without proper tune?
so when its tuned problem solved?
its just so hard for you to believe it works isnt it? i already did a slight pull to make sure it was boosting and i didnt have any vacuum leaks anywhere and i only took it to 6k, i was at 7 psi (full boost for how i have it setup) at roughly 4700 maybe 4800, not sure i couldnt tell cuz that bitch threw me back in my seat hard
its not when i get into it dies. its once the car is warmed up aka normal temp readings and im driving around completely normal ( shifting between 2500 to 3000 rpms) whenever i go to slowdown and i push the cluth in the car idles down on its own and doesnt stop. it just shuts off. when i cold start it its fine, it sits there and idles statys running then once warmed up and the throttle goes up as soon as there is no throttle at the normal operating temp it chokes out
Provide more details on the setup, and I could possibly tell you why, but more than likely its the set up. Do you have a light weight flywheel installed?
yes i have a lightwieght flywheel but nothing ridicolous like 8 or 9 lbs, its been a while but if i remember correctly it was an 11 lb flywheel that i put in. The setup is a stock b16 with a ramhorn mani with t3/t70 turbo, huge front mount with 2.5 inch intercooler piping, greddy bov and tial wastgate with 7 psi spring. Side port on the wastegate is run straight to the compressor housing on the turbo, top port on wastegate is left open. boost guage and bov are running off a blox vacuum mani. it has rc 550cc injectors and a walbro 255lph fuel pump. And a ecu tuned for a garret gt28 on b16 with same setup besides turbo and on a higher boost setting
Do you have a wideband to see your air fuel ratios? Its possibly leaning out, or it needs a little more timing at the bottom to keep it spinning due to the flywheel being lighter.
no i dont have a wideband but that sounds like what its probaly doing and that makes sense man i appreciate the info greatly
i fuckin told you what the deal was....shiot son fix it.
you havent once said its cuz of lack of tune. you said turbos too big, and or i need supporting mods, basically saying "ditch the turbo or build the motor" which = "not necessary"
dont no if it helps...but my talon did the same thing...it came down too out of time and vac leak...but i fixed it and it idled fine...
Its more than likely that his tune for the other turbo was when it was warm outside, and now that its cold, it is not getting enough fuel at idle, due to the ECT and IAT adjustments not being set up thoroughly for vast temp differences. I don't think the size difference of the turbos is going to make a big difference on fuel at idle. Of course it will make a big difference when the boost comes on.
thanks to both of you for the help instead of criticism

nismojunkie: i know youve put every turbo size possible on every motor (even hondas cuz their so nismo) and know what turbo will work and what wont on each said engine. i should believe you cuz your certified but for some reason i dont because of a certain tech question by you http://www.tennspeed.net/forums/showthread.php?t=5505.
but thanks anyway
try running some e85 in it. if that helps your idle, you're too lean. if it hurts your idle, you're too rich. either way it seems as if you tuned your car for only top end and forgot about the rest...
ill wait to see if the tune fixes it b4 i go putting that shit in their but as for the tune its not for this setup so nothing was forgot about. thanks for the input mane

i never even thought of this
very good sir. it was tuned in mid sumer when it was hot as FUCK. i remember cuz the car had no ac and we were driving round sweating our nuts off when we were tuning it. And it is cold as shit outside now. you my friend are very insightful, thanks greatly. you have a thing or 2 to teach nismo
